Project Background
Barra, known as one of the best beaches in the city of Inhambane, Mozambique, adorns the Indian Ocean coastline with its pristine sands and crystal-clear waters. This idyllic location makes Barra a must-see destination for those planning a beach holiday, promising an unforgettable mix of relaxation and adventure.
Project Concept
The Praia da Barra project is the first designed within this context, and its conception was based on two premises that allowed us to question and rethink housing on the coast. The first was maximum respect for the site and the second was to understand and learn from the vernacular and contemporary architecture of the region, which represents so many years of knowledge and experience and which usually has unrivalled functionality.
Project Highlights
We present an architecture that generates a close relationship with nature and at the same time carries over the gestures of traditional coastal architecture: the use of palm leaf roofs, local materials, cross ventilation, light floors are some of the design strategies that are widely used today and, at the same time, a know-how that should be present in any beach project. Rethinking housing on the coast is not an easy task;
Materials & Processing Technology
The project was articulated by squares, walkways and open paths that allow the complex to circulate fluidly. The result is a series of intermittent spaces; interior and exterior canopies that merge into the landscape and allow the architecture to disappear in an ambiguous relationship between the natural and the artificial in a continuous panorama of unaltered spaces.
Floor Plan
For the Praia da Barra Project, we thought of a light architecture where we questioned scale, the physical relationship between context and architecture and the use of some elements, such as the straw roof; an architecture where we imagined living only on terraces or on a coastal palisade. An architecture that ‘touched’ the site as little as possible and, where it did, was as careful and respectful as possible.
Project Aerial View
For the construction, we used only local materials; certified and tropical wood for the roof and straw - often piles - for the foundations and walkway structures, and styrofoam for the partitions, which are coated with cementitious speckles, which gives them a thermal quality, minimising the use of energy to cool the spaces.
Renderings (Except Aerial View)
The future of the coast depends on us; that its flora, fauna and landscape are treated carefully and responsibly. With this in mind, we implement architectural and landscaping ideas for regenerative purposes; to make the place better and seek to preserve its values: not just to preserve its current state, but to return it to what it was, to a better condition than we find it today.
questioning its foundations and its future is a job that corresponds to our generation, which must seek balance in its development and evolution, taking into account the interaction of the global and its relationship with the local.
