Tempered glass is also name toughened glass or ESG glass, Tempered Safety Glass is fabricated by heating annealed glass to over 600°C and cooling it rapidly, which locks the outer surfaces of the glass in a state of high compression, and the core or center of the glass in compensating tension. It is a safety glass which is used when strength, thermal resistance and safety are important considerations.
Toughened Glass Characteristic
• In the event of breakage the particles are small and are relatively harmless compared with the sharp splinters resulting from the breakage of annealed glass.
• The toughening process also greatly reduces the risk of thermal breakage.
• Up to five times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness, making it an ideal safety or security glass.
• Conforms to the requirements of BS6206:1981 Class A as well as European Standard BS EN 12150.
• Available in Clear, Tinted, Reflective, Low Iron, Etched, Textured, Colorsmart, Thermocolour and Low E glass types.
• All work done on Toughened glass (beveling, cutting, drilling, etc.) must be done before tempering.
• Allows architects and builders far greater scope in their use of glass in buildings.
Processing for tempered safety glass
| Edge work | An arrissed edge is the simplest type of edgework and consists of removing the sharp edges from “as cut” glass. Flat ground edges give a flat profile with smooth arris. A polished edge can be specified for exposed edges, e.g. in furniture. |
| Holes | Toughened glass can be supplied with drilled holes (no matter straight or conical). The diameter of holes should not be less than the thickness of the glass, the distance between the edges of a hole to the glass edge should not be less than twice the glass thickness, the distance of the edge of a hole to the corner of the glass should not be less than six times the glass thickness. |
| Shapes | Except rectangle, Sun Global Glass also could do shape toughened glass, like round, Trapezoid, parallel, etc. |
| Other processing like acid etched, color painted, digital printing, pattern silkscreen, also could be done well. | |
