A true safety product, laminated glass holds together even when shattered, due to the powerful interlayer, consisting of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), set between its two or more layers of glass. This interlayer functions by preventing the glass from breaking into large sharp pieces. Rather, when the impact is not strong enough to pierce the glass, the pane cracks, producing a characteristic spider-web pattern. This type of glass is used in areas and situations where the glass could fall if shattered or where there is a possibility of human contact or to comply with Building glazing regulations in so called 'Critical Locations' for example in windows and doors. As well as being highly recommended as a safety product, the PVB interlayer also gives the laminated glass impressive sound insulation and blocks 99% of transmitted UV light.
